IS SONY A5100 STILL WORTH IT IN 2020?

I have been using this camera for a year now and i think it's enough to share with you my honest opinion about it.

It was this month last year (April 2019) when i introduced to being an instagram influencer. Moreover, there are lots of reason why i decided to have a camera aside from my phone’s camera. One of that is I want to upgrade my youtube channel by producing high quality vlogs. I also want to start to learn film and photography while finding my niche.

I was then convinced by other youtube reviews to go with Sony rather than Canon. As the hardware of Sony is more sturdy and can last for a long time. So me and my mom went to sony’s branch in festival mall and bought the Sony A5100 for Php28,890 (August 2019). It comes with a free camera bag, big tripod w/ pouch, 16GB memory card, charger and battery.

I wasn’t really expecting from the performance of the camera but if you’re also upgrading from phone then this is already a great buy. It can perform well in both photos and videos. It has a flip screen but doesn’t have any mic and audio jack for high-quality sound videos. But it has enough features that you can explore from like the aperture priority in which gives a more dramatic bokeh background. It also has a great manual settings in which you can take speed events such as racing or running with its maximum of 60 frames per second.

The only downside that I am experiencing with this camera is it shuts down when it overheats. It has a precaution on the back of the flip screen saying that it isn’t a malfunction of the camera. This only occurs when I do a long continuous video like a sit-in vlog. But in total performance, it isn’t really a bad issue. It can shoot videos from 12(MP)megapixels up to 24MP. But this requires a specific memory card for shooting 24 megapixels because it’s in AVCHD file type unlike the usual MP4/MOV (12mp).

The 12MP can already make a difference when compared to a phone’s camera capabilities, as this has an OSS lens, in which gives a more smooth videos. When it comes to the battery life, i would say that this has a great longevity of use, just beware of making it overheat from the environment.

I’m not going deeper with the specs as i’m not really knowledgeable in camera tech. I truly recommend this for people who wants to start in photography, film or vlogging.

I just recommend that if you’re gonna consider buying this, make sure to have a maximum of 64GB memory card. Because i was warned by one of their staffs to not invest in memory cards greater than 64GB as it may tend to corrupt and it’ll be difficult to retrieve all the files when it happens. I also recommend you to find a tempered glass or screen protector for the glass monitor for it to be more durable and scratch free. It also nice to invest in a silicone protector for the camera aside from storing it to the camera bag.

Over time you could purchase a lens for a more dramatic portraits, but since sony has an expensive and limited choices of lenses you can have alternative lens like a meike 50mm (great for portraits) or meike 30/35mm (great for OOTD shots) in which retails for p3000 to p3500 in lazada. Look for Juan Gadgets or Camera Commons online.
